Summary Introduction
The nitrogen fixation process requires a great input of energy. This process is catalyzed by the nitrogenase enzyme. This enzyme is highly sensitive to the oxygen molecule. In such cases, the filamentous bacteria like Anabena and Nostoc forms specialized cells known as heterocyst. These structures are completely dedicated to the nitrogen fixation process.
