Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and
deprived of oxygen. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a
person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle
cell trait. If we use s to represent
a sickle cell gene, and S a healthy gene, the
table shows the four possibilities for the
children of one healthy, SS parent, and one
parent with sicke cell trait, Ss. Find the
probability that these parents give birth to a
child who has sickle cell anemia.

Some traits of plants and animals depend on inheritance of a single gene. This is called Mendelian inheritance, after Gregor Mendel (1822-1884). Each of us has an ABO blood type, which describes whether two characteristics called A and B are present. Every human being has two blood type alleles (gene forms), one inherited from our mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O. Which two we inherit determines our blood type. Here is a table that shows what our blood type is for each combination of two alleles.

We inherit each of a parent's two alleles with probability 0.5. We inherit independently from our mother and father.
What is the probability that both children have different blood types?
Scientist Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) is often called the "father of modern genetics" and is famous for his work involving
the inheritance of certain traits in pea plants. Suppose that the genes controlling the color of peas are Y for yellow and y
for green. Each plant has two genes, one from the female (seed) and one from the male (pollen). The Y gene is dominant,
and therefore a plant with genes YY will have yellow peas, a plant with genes Yy or yY will have yellow peas, and a plant
with genes yy will have green peas.
If a plant with two yellow genes (YY) is crossed with a plant with two green genes (yy), the result is four hybrid offspring
with genotypes Yy. The offspring will be yellow, but will carry the recessive green gene.

Therefore, to determine if the two studies are inconsistent in their description of generation A we must compare the age groups from the two studies to see if either one includes people not included in the other study. In other words, we need to determine if the age ranges match up exactly when the year of the study is taken in to consideration. In the first study from 2005, generation A is defined to be people ages 17–28. Three years later, in 2008, the second study was published and defined generation A to be people ages ages 20–31. a) First we examine the low end of the age ranges. We note that someone who was 17 years old in 2005 would be ______ years old in 2008. b) Now we examine the high end of the age ranges. It is assumed that each customer purchases once a week at one of the two supermarkets (but not both). In a study, a sample of 100 buyers was taken for 10 weeks. From this research it is known that if buyers go to X-mart store one week, 85 people will still buy at X-mart store the following week and if buyers go to Y-mart store one week, 70 people will still buy at Y-mart store. mart the following week. 1. Make a table and matrix of transition probabilities. 2. If John purchases at X-mart in the first week, what is the probability that Bob purchases at X-store in the third and fourth weeks?arrow_forward
- In a certain hospital, the following data were recorded. 25 patients had the A antigen;8 had the A and not the B antigen;27 had the B antigen;22 had the B and Rh antigens;30 had the Rh antigen;12 had none of the antigens;16 had the A and Rh antigens;15 had all three antigens. How many patientsa. were represented? b. had exactly one antigen?c. had exactly two antigens? d. had O-positive blood?e. had AB-positive blood? f. had B-negative blood?g. had O-negative blood? h. had A-positive blood?arrow_forwardEach of us has an ABO blood type. We get this blood type by inheriting two alleles-one from our mother and one from our father. Each of these alleles can be A, B, or O and the combination of the two that we inherit determines our blood type. The table below explains the combinations of alleles and the blood types those combinations produce. Blood Type Alleles Inherited A and A A and B A and O B and B B and O O and O A AB A B B O Harper has alleles A and O (therefore blood type A) and Taylor has alleles A and B (therefore blood type AB). On your own paper, fill in the chart of the possible combinations of alleles that their children could inherit: allele from Taylor A B allele from Harper A O Then list the possible blood types their children can have and the probabilities of each type.arrow_forwardExample 2.9 Suppose that a particular trait of a person (such as eye color or left handedness) is classified on the basis of one pair of genes and suppose that d represents a dominant gene and r a recessive gene. Thus a person with dd genes is pure dominance, one with rr is pure recessive, and one with rd is hybrid. The pure dominance and the hybrid are alike in appearance. Chil- dren receive one gene from each parent. If, with respect to a particular trait, two hybrid parents have a total of four children, what is the probability that exactly three of the four children have the outward appearance of the dominant gene?arrow_forward
- You are checking for underage drinking in a bar. There are four people at a table. You know that person A is drinking a soft drink, person B is drinking a cocktail, person Cis 17 years old, and person D is 22 years old. The drinking age is 21, and minors are allowed in the bar. Your job is to verify no law is being broken. The following are Y/N questions: Do you need to check person $A $'s drink or ID? Do you need to check person $B $'s drink or ID? Do you need to check person SC$'s drink or ID? Do you need to check person $D $'s drink or ID?arrow_forwardA research wants to determine if pre-natal exposure to the hormones in birth control pills alters the sex makeup of midshipman fish populations (which are typically half male and half female).Specifically, the researcher wishes to test the hypothesis that exposure to hormones will increase the number of females in the population. The researcher exposes a group of pregnant midshipman fish to birth control hormones and records the sex of the first 19 offspring birthed. They then observe that 0 are female.Use a sign test to test the indicated hypothesis. What is the obtained value?arrow_forwardThe figure to the right shows the results of a survey in which 1004 adults from Country A, 997 adults from Country B, 999 adults from Country C, 1000 adults from Country D, and 995 adults from Country E were asked whether national identity is strongly tied to birthplace. National Identity and Birthplace People from different countries who believe national identity is strongly tied to birthplace Country A 31% Country B 18% Country C 23% Country D 55% Country E 10% Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population proportion of adults who say national identity is strongly tied to birthplace for each country listed. The 95% confidence interval for the proportion of adults from Country A who say national identity is strongly tied to birthplace is (☐.) - (Round to three decimal places as needed.)arrow_forward

How do the sensitivity or specificity of each combination of the tests change when compared with single test? b. assuming you are the harried director of the diabetes screening program, which test or combination of tests would you prefer to use?arrow_forwardA research wants to determine if pre-natal exposure to the hormones in birth control pills alters the sex makeup of midshipman fish populations (which are typically half male and half female).Specifically, the researcher wishes to test the hypothesis that exposure to hormones will increase the number of females in the population. The researcher exposes a group of pregnant midshipman fish to birth control hormones and records the sex of the first 11 offspring birthed. They then observe that 1 are female.Use a sign test and a alpha of .05 to test the indicated hypothesis. What is the critical value?arrow_forwardMr. Andrews, a grape merchant, inquires about a certain wine that he tastes at a party. The host tells him that from a total of ten bottles of that wine, six came from the north vineyard and four came from the south vineyard. From this information, the merchant concludes that he should visit the north vineyard for a sample of the grapes. Later, he discovers that the wine in question came from a bottle labeled Classic Reserve, and 30 of 100 barrels of north vineyard wine were bottled with that label, while 130 of 200 barrels of south vineyard wine were bottled with that label. Given this new information, what is the probability that the wine came from the north vineyard? (Hint: For this exercise, use Bayes's theorem.)arrow_forward
