Concept Introduction:

Alkenes are assigned E or Z configuration depending on the orientation of the groups attached to the double bonded carbon atoms.

>

The priority of the groups attached to each double bonded carbon atom is defined on the basis of the Cahn–-Ingold–-Prelog sequence rules.

>

The atomic numbers of the atoms which get directly attached to the double bonded carbon atoms are compared. The atom having the higher atomic numbers gets a higher priority.If the atomic numbers are the same, then the next atoms attached to them are compared and priorities are assigned.

When the groups with the higher priority are on the same side of the double bond, the alkene is said to have Z configuration.When the groups with the higher priority are on the opposite side of the double bond, the alkene is said to have E configuration.
