Lumbosacral enlargement: It involves in the innervation of the pelvis and lower limbs. Conus medullaris: It is a conical, tapered region of the spinal cord that is present inferior to the lumbar enlargement. Filum terminale: It is a slender strand of fibrous tissue that ranges from the inferior tip of the conus medullaris to the second sacral vertebra. Cauda equina: Since the adult spinal cord ends at the level of the first or second lumbar vertebra, the posterior and anterior roots of the spinal segments extend inferiorly. When this portion is seen in gross dissection, the filum terminale and the anterior and posterior roots look like a horse’s tail. This region is called the cauda equina. Posterior medial sulcus: It is a shallow longitudinal groove that is present on the dorsal part of the spinal cord. Posterior root: It consists of the axon part of the sensory neurons and is present on the posterior or dorsal side of the spinal cord.
