An automotive supplier is considering changing its electrical wire harness to save money. The idea is to replace a current 20-gauge wire with a 22-gauge wire. Because not all wires in the harness can be changed the new wire must work with the current wire splice process .To determine whether the new wire is compatible, random samples were selected and measured with a pull lest A pull test measures the force required to pull the spliced wires apart. The minimum pull force required by the customer is 20 pounds. Twenty observations of the forces needed for the current wire are

- A traffic office in a country was in charge of a study where the safety of passengers in different types of cars was examined. Three models were examined; small cars, minivans and SUVS and six cars in each category were inspected. A special traffic accident simulator was used in the study and the pressure on the drivers' heads was measured. Umferðarastofa wanted to investigate whether there was a difference in the average pressure on the head during a collision in these three types of cars and used a variance analysis for this purpose. To determine this, 40 new-style golf balls and 40 original-style golf balls are randomly selected from the company’s production line on a specific day. The balls are then placed in a bag and shaken. A golf pro then selects a ball and hits it using a driver. The distance the ball travels is then measured. The bag is shaken again, and the golf pro selects another ball and hits it with the same driver. He continues this procedure until all 80 of the golf balls are hit. Which of the following is a benefit of having replication in the experiment? A)Repeating the experiment will allow the company to compare the distances traveled by the new type of golf ball from both experiments. B)Having a large number of each type of golf ball will allow for a good comparison of the differences in distances traveled for the two types of balls.…arrow_forwardAfter receiving complaints from McDonald’s customers in Japan about the amount offrench fries being served, the on-line news magazine ”Rocket News” decided to testthe actual weight of the fries served at a particular Japanese McDonald’s restaurant.According to the Rocket News article, the official weight standard set by McDonald’s ofJapan is for a medium sized fries to weigh 135 grams. - The authors of a paper compared two different instruments for measuring a person's capacity for breathing out air. (This measurement is helpful in diagnosing various lung disorders.) The two instruments considered were a Wright peak flow meter and a mini-Wright peak flow meter. Seventeen people participated in the study, and for each person air flow was measured once using the Wright meter and once using the mini-Wright meter. The Wright meter is thought to provide a better measure of air flow, but the mini-Wright meter is easier to transport and to use. Use of the mini-Wright meter could be recommended as long as there is not convincing evidence that the mean reading for the mini-Wright meter is different from the mean reading for Wright meter. For purposes of this exercise, you can assume that it is reasonable to consider the 17 people who participated in this study as representative of the population of interest. Data values from this paper are given in the accompanying table.…arrow_forwardThe authors of a paper compared two different instruments for measuring a person's capacity for breathing out air. In the experiment, a group of college students was told that they were participating in a manual dexterity study. After the counting task, the participants were asked to dip their hands into bowls of very hot water (122 degrees) and rate how uncomfortable it was. - A plant superintendent has been assigned the task of improving the joint strength of a clutch assembly. The assembly consists of two components: the clutch cup and the drive sprocket. The two components are joined together by means of a brazing operation. The plant superintendent wanted to investigate whether changing the brazing material would affect average braze strength. They decided he would braze one group with pure copper wire and braze another group with the existing copper alloy. One of the two components, the sprocket, is manufactured from powdered metal. The superintendent had observed from past studies that there was a strong relationship between the density of the sprocket and the joint strength of the assembly after brazing. The greater the porosity of the powdered metal sprocket, the more absorption of the braze material takes place, resulting in a weaker bond. They decided to use the known relationship between sprocket porosity and joint strength for setting up a…arrow_forwardThe quality control engineer at Palmer Industries is interested in estimating the tensile strength of steel wire based on its outside diameter and the amount of molybdenum in the steel.
