Answer to Problem 2A

The angle x to the nearest minute is =46°6'.

The dimension y to three decimal places is y=AE=85.788 mm

Explanation of Solution

Given:

  Mathematics for Machine Technology, Chapter 70, Problem 2A

A figure as above, in which different dimensions are shown.

  AB=77.023 mm, BC=CD=DE=21.755 mm

Concept Used:

For a right angle triangle

tanθ=perpendicularbase

             sinθ=Perpendicularhypotenusehypotenuse=Perpendicularsinθ

Calculation:

As per the given problem in the ΔABC

  Perpendicular, BC=21.755 mm, Base, AB=77.023 mm.

Substitute these values in the formula tanθ=perpendicularbase, we get

When θ=a

  tana=21.75577.023a=tan121.75577.023a=15.77°

The hypotenuse of the ΔABC is AC

  hypotenuse=PerpendicularsinaAC=Perpendicularsina

Substitute values in the formula AC=Perpendicularsina, we get

  AC=21.755 mmsin15.77°AC=80.05 mm

Now in the ΔACD

  tanb=21.75580.05b=tan121.75580.05b=15.2°

The hypotenuse of the ΔACD is AD

Substitute values in the formula AD=CDsinb

  AD=21.755 mmsin15.2°AD=82.97 mm

Now in the ΔADE

  tanc=DEADc=tan121.75582.97c=14.69°

The hypotenuse of the ΔADE is AE=y

Substitute values in the formula AE=y=DEsinc

  AE=21.755 mmsin14.69°y=AE=85.788 mm

The dimension y to three decimal places is y=AE=85.788 mm

The angle x=a+b+c

  x=15.77°+15.2°+14.69°x=15.77°+15.2°+14.69°x=45.66°x=46°6'

The angle x to the nearest minute is =46°6'.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the angle x to the nearest minute is =46°6'.

Therefore, the dimension y to three decimal places is y=AE=85.788 mm.
