The following data should be used for S7-10 through S7-12.
FlavorRite purchased a used van for use in its business on January 1, 2017. It paid $17,000 for the van. FlavorRite expects the van to have a useful life of four years, with an estimated residual value of $1,400. FlavorRite expects to drive the van 16,000 miles during 2017, 19,000 miles during 2018, 17,000 miles in 2019, and 48,000 miles in 2020, for total expected miles of 100,000.

- (Learning Objectives 3, 4: Measure DDB depreciation; analyze the effect of a saleof a plant asset) On January 2, 2018, Ellet Furniture purchased display shelving for $8,900cash, expecting the shelving to remain in service for five years. Ellet depreciated the shelvingon a double-declining-balance basis, with $1,100 estimated residual value. On August 31, 2019,the company sold the shelving for $2,800 cash. Record both the depreciation expense on theshelving for 2019 and its sale in August. Also show how to compute the gain or loss on thedisposal of the shelving.arrow_forward(Learning Objectives 3, 4: Compute depreciation; record a gain or loss on disposal)On January 1, 2017, Stockton Manufacturing purchased a machine for $910,000. - (Learning Objectives 3, 4: Compute depreciation; record a gain or loss on disposal)On January 1, 2017, Worldwide Manufacturing purchased a machine for $810,000 that itexpected to have a useful life of four years. The company estimated that the residual value ofthe machine was $50,000. Worldwide Manufacturing used the machine for two years and soldit on January 1, 2019, for $350,000. As of December 31, 2018, the accumulated depreciation onthe machine was $380,000.1. Calculate the gain or loss on the sale of the machinery.2. Record the sale of the machine on January 1, 2019.arrow_forward(Learning Objective 3: Compute and record depreciation after a change in usefullife of the asset) Fun Town Amusement Park paid $500,000 for a concession stand. Fun Townstarted out depreciating the building using the straight-line method over 25 years with a residualvalue of zero. After using the concession stand for four years, Fun Town determines that thebuilding will remain useful for only five more years. Record Fun Town’s depreciation on theconcession stand for year five using the straight-line method.arrow_forward(Learning Objective 3: Compute depreciation and book value by three methods—firstyear only) On January 1, 2017, Northeast Transportation Company purchased a used aircraftat a cost of $58,900,000. Northeast expects the plane to remain useful for five years(7,200,000 miles) and to have a residual value of $4,900,000. Northeast expects to fly the plane750,000 miles the first year, 1,375,000 miles each year during the second, third, and fourthyears, and 2,325,000 miles the last year.1. Compute Northeast’s depreciation for the first two years on the plane using the followingmethods:a. Straight-line methodb. Units-of-production method (round depreciation per mile to the closest cent)c. Double-declining-balance method2. Show the airplane’s book value at the end of the first year under each depreciation method.arrow_forward
- (Learning Objectives 1, 3, 4: Measure a plant asset’s cost; calculate UOP depreciation; analyze the effect of a used asset trade-in) Concord Truck Company is a large truckingcompany. The company uses the units-of-production (UOP) method to depreciate its trucks. To follow are facts about one Mack truck in the company’s fleet. When this truck wasacquired in 2018, the tractor-trailer rig had cost $420,000 and was expected to remain in servicefor 10 years or 1,000,000 miles. Its estimated residual value was $100,000. During 2018, the truckwas driven 77,000 miles; during 2019, 175,000 miles; and during 2020, 190,000 miles. After thetruck was driven 45,000 miles in 2021, the company traded in the Mack truck for a Freightlinertruck with a fair market value of $270,000. In addition to the trade-in of the Mack truck, ConcordTruck Company paid cash of $31,000 for the Freightliner truck. Determine Concord’s gain or losson the transaction. Classify each of the following expenditures as a capital expenditure or an immediate expense related to machinery:a. Periodic lubrication after the machinery is placed in serviceb. Special reinforcement to the machinery platformc. Major overhaul to extend the machinery’s useful life by five yearsd. Training of personnel for initial operation of the machinerye. Purchase pricef. Income tax paid on income earned from the sale of products manufactured by themachineryg. Ordinary repairs to keep the machinery in good working orderh. Transportation and insurance while machinery is in transit from seller to buyeri. Sales tax paid on the purchase pricej. Lubrication of the machinery before it is placed in servicek. Installation of the conveyor-belt machineryarrow_forwardTo test your formulas, assume the machine purchased had an estimated useful life of three years (20,000, 30,000, and 50,000 hours, respectively). Enter the new information in the Data Section of the worksheet. Does your depreciation total 320,000 under all three methods? There are three common errors made by students completing this worksheet. Lets clear up two of them. One, an asset that has a three-year life should have no depreciation claimed in Year 4. This can be corrected using an =IF statement in Year 4. For example, the correct formula in cell C32 is =IF(B32D9,0,(D7D8)/D9) or =IF(B32D9, 0, SLN(D7, D8, D9)). You may wish to edit what you have already entered rather than retype it. Two, as mentioned in requirement 2, the double-declining-balance calculation needs to be modified in the last year of the assets life. Assuming you have already modified the formula for Year 4 (per instructions in step 2), alter the formula for Year 3 also. If you corrected any formulas, test their correctness by trying different estimated useful lives (between 3 and 8) in cell E9. Then reset the Data Section to the original values, save the revised file as DEPREC2, and reprint the worksheet to show the correct formulas. The third common error doesnt need to be corrected in this problem. The general form of the double-declining-balance formula needs to be modified to check the net book value of the asset each year to make sure it does not go below salvage value. =DDB does this automatically, but if you are writing your own formulas, this gets very complicated and is beyond the scope of the problem.arrow_forward
