Answer to Problem 49P

The frontal area of the cell phone by excluding the display panel in SI unit and U.S. Customary unit is 0.0057m2 and 0.06156ft2.

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

The height of the cell phone (H) is 13cm,

The width of the cell phone (W) is 8cm.

Formula used:

Formula to calculate the frontal area of the cell phone by excluding the display panel is,

A=A1A2 (1)

Here,

A1 is the total frontal area of the cell phone,

A2 is the area of the display panel.

Calculation:

Total frontal area:

Formula to calculate the total frontal area of the cell phone is,

A1=H×W (2)

Here,

H is height of the cell phone,

W is width of the cell phone.

Substitute 13cm for H, and 8cm for W in equation (2) to find A1.

A1=(13cm)×(8cm)=104cm2

Area of the display panel:

Refer to the figure 7.49, the height and width of the cell phone is divided as slots. Therefore,

The height of the cell phone = 13 cm = 18 slots

For 1 slot, the height is:

1slot=1318cm

The width of the cell phone=8 cm=11 slots

For 1 slot, the width is:

1slot=811cm

From the figure 7.49, approximately the number of slots in height of the display panel is 10, and in width of the display panel is 9.

Substitute the respective slot values in cm for the height and width of the cell phone.

The height of the display panel(h) = 10 slots(10)(1318cm)=7.22cm

The width of the display panel (w)= 9 slots(9)(1318cm)=6.5cm

Formula to calculate the area of the display panel is,

A2=h×w (3)

Here,

h is height of the display panel,

w is width of the display panel.

Substitute 7.22cm for h, and 6.5cm for w in equation (3) to find A2.

A2=(7.22cm)×(6.5cm)=47cm2

Substitute 104cm2 for A1 and, 47cm2 for A2 in equation (1) to find A.

A=(104cm2)(47cm2)=57cm2

The SI unit of the frontal area by excluding the display panel is,

A=57cm2 [1cm2=0.0001m2]=57(0.0001m2)=0.0057m2

The U.S. Customary unit of the frontal area by excluding the display panel is,

A=57cm2 [1cm2=0.00108ft2]=57(0.00108ft2)=0.06156ft2

Therefore, the frontal area of the cell phone by excluding the display panel in SI unit and U.S. Customary unit is 0.0057m2 and 0.06156ft2.

Conclusion:

Thus, the frontal area of the cell phone by excluding the display panel in SI unit and U.S. Customary unit is 0.0057m2 and 0.06156ft2.
