Introduction: The fungus is a eukaryotic heterotrophic organism that falls under the kingdom Fungi. This organism either forms a symbiotic or parasitic relationship with animals or plants and some fungi occurs as free-living in water or soil. Examples of fungi are mildewed, molds, yeasts, rusts, mushrooms, etc. The reproduction of fungus occurs as both sexual and asexual reproduction which produces spores.

Beneficial aspects:

  • Most of the molds are good decomposers that decompose the organic matter thereby it mediates the nutrient cycling.

  • Since these molds are capable of fermenting the organic molecules they are very useful in industrial purposes.
  • Some are molds are used in the recombinant DNA technology for the production of drugs on a large scale.

Harmful aspects:

  • Several types of molds cause various diseases in plants, animals and even humans.
  • The molds are usually allergens that cause the severe immune reaction with the release of histamine by the mast cells.
  • It is the effective neurotoxin that has the ability to damage the CNS thereby it causes visual sensitivity.
  • The volatile organic compounds produced by the molds serve as the major cause for the irritation in the skin of humans.
