Chapter 7, Problem 23P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The general equation should be written for the formation of an ester by the condensation of a tertiary alcohol with carboxylic acid.

Concept Introduction:

Compounds consist of carbon and hydrogen is known as hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are classified as saturated hydrocarbon and unsaturated hydrocarbon.

The compounds consist of hydroxyl group (-OH) are known as alcohols. The general formula is R-OH, where R is an alkyl group.

In ester, carbonyl carbon is bonded to oxygen atom which is further linked with another carbon atom. The general formula is RCOOR, where R and R is an alkyl group.

In carboxylic acid, carbonyl carbon is linked to carbon or hydrogen on one side and on other side linked to a heteroatom such as O, N, S. The general formula is RCOOH, where R is an alkyl group.
