The atmosphere which forms with the planet is known as the primary atmosphere. This primary atmosphere is lost by the terrestrial planets because primary atmosphere consists of the hydrogen and helium gas. These gases are light weight and possess very high kinetic energy so they escape the planet.

The atmosphere which is formed later is known as the secondary atmosphere of the planet. The secondary atmosphere is the result of the accretion, volcanism and impacts of the huge number of comets and asteroids.

The current atmosphere of the terrestrial planets is secondary atmosphere, giant planets such as Jupiter still has primary atmosphere.
