Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The explanation corresponding to the observation that sperm whale is a rich source of the myoglobin protein is to be stated.

Concept introduction: Proteins are the biomolecules which are composed of the long chain of amino acid residues. The protein that is an oxygen and iron containing protein present in the muscle tissue of mammals is known as myoglobin.

Answer to Problem 1P

The muscle of the sperm whale contains the rich source of the myoglobin protein which provides the higher concentration of oxygen to the whale for breathing at the time of swimming.

Explanation of Solution

It is given that the myoglobin protein is found in the sperm whale and its muscle is the rich source of myoglobin.

As myoglobin possesses the high content of oxygen and iron, thus, the high concentration of this protein provides higher supply of oxygen to the sperm whale. This higher concentration of oxygen is required by the whale to swim to the long distances between their breaths.

Thus, the muscle of the sperm whale contains the stock of oxygen due to the presence of myoglobin which is used in between the breathing series while swimming.
