Chapter 7, Problem 16PIAT
Summary Introduction

To review:

The conclusion drawn from the results of the given study.

Introduction:

Autophagy is the self-destruction of the damaged cell organelles and cytoplasmic entities in the lysosomes. The phenomenon of autophagy is responsible for the removal of melanosomes by lysosomal destruction. A research group investigated the role of the autophagy on the skin color with the help of drugs that will either inhibit autophagy or induce autophagy in the cells. The graph illustrates the comparison between the level of the melanin in the samples that are treated with drugs and the untreated control sample.  value is given as *P<0.05, &P**lt;0.01. The graph below shows the comparison between the levels of melanin in the treated sample with the untreated control sample.

If using animals in medical experiments could save human lives, is it ethical to do so? In your answer, apply at least one ethical theory in support of your position.
You aim to test the hypothesis that the Tbx4 and Tbx5 genes inhibit each other's expression during limb development. With access to chicken embryos and viruses capable of overexpressing Tbx4 and Tbx5, describe an experiment to investigate whether these genes suppress each other's expression in the limb buds. What results would you expect if they do repress each other? What results would you expect if they do not repress each other?
You decide to delete Fgf4 and Fgf8 specifically in the limb bud. Explain why you would not knock out these genes in the entire embryo instead.
