Catabolism is the chemical reaction which breaks down large chemical molecules into its smaller molecules. Energy is released when the molecules break down. Anabolism is the opposite of catabolism. It is often referred to as biosynthesis. The term biosynthesis explains the formation of molecules or cellular structure. Energy is used in the formation of larger molecules from the smaller molecules.
