Concept explainers
To determine:
The role of the producers in an ecosystem.
Introduction:
The producers are the organisms which can produce their own food with the help of sunlight. The producers are the base of any food chain. The consumers feed on the producers, either directly or indirectly (secondary and tertiary consumers).
Explanation of Solution
The main role of the producers is to convert the light energy to usable form. The producers use the sunlight for the fixation of the atmospheric carbon dioxide in theform of glucose and other organic molecules. The process of formation of organic molecule from carbon dioxide and water is known as photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, the oxygen is produced as a byproduct. The glucose is used as the energy source by the consumers.
The producers trap the solar energy into organic molecules which is used as the energy source by the consumers.
