Introduction:

ATP synthase is located in the mitochondrial matrix and is the 5^th multisubunit oxidative phosphorylation complex. It synthesizes ATP from ADP in the mitochondrial matrix using the energy provided by the proton electrochemical gradient. ATP synthase consists of two subunits: the F₁ subunit, the soluble unit located in the mitochondrial matrix and the F₀ unit bound to the inner mitochondrial membrane.
