Introduction:
An experiment is done by a scientist, Jan Baptista van Helmont to understand the material that adds weight in a growing tree. He planted a tree of 5 pounds in a place having 200 pounds of soil. He observed the tree after 5 years and found that the weight of the soil was 199 pounds, 14 ounces, but the tree gained almost 169 pounds of weight. According to him, the water that is absorbed by the plant helped it to gain all of its additional weight.
