Chapter 56.4, Problem 3CC
MAKE CONNECTIONS → Mutagens are chemical and physical agents that induce mutations in DNA (see Concept 17.5). How does reduced ozone concentration in the atmosphere increase the likelihood of mutations in various organisms?

E17. Gene mutagenesis is also used to explore the structure and function
of proteins. For example, changes can be made to the coding
sequence of a gene to determine how alterations in the amino acid
sequence affect the function of a protein. Let's suppose that you are
interested in the functional importance of a particular glutamic acid
(an amino acid) within a protein you are studying. By site-directed
mutagenesis, you make mutant proteins in which this glutamic
acid codon has been changed to other codons. You then test the
encoded mutant proteins for functionality. The results are as follows:
Functionality (%)
Normal protein
100
Mutant proteins containing
Тугosine
Phenylalanine
3
Aspartic acid
94
Glycine
From these results, what would you conclude about the functional
significance of this glutamic acid within the protein?
MAKE CONNECTIONS Speculate about whether thesame enzyme could methylate both a histone and a DNAbase. (See Concept 5.4.)

- Human Genome ProjectIn 2003, the Human Genome Project was successfully completed, determining the exact sequence of the entire human genome, which is made up of 3 billion nucleotide base pairs. The data generated from the Human Genome Project is freely available online to anyone. Many researches and innovations stemmed from the HGP, allowing the identifications of 1 800 disease genes. Many of the corporations using the results from the HGP are privately funded, and research is being done for profit even though the HGP results are provided freely.Identify one advantage and one disadvantage of corporate funding and patenting genetic research results.arrow_forwardPls help ASAParrow_forwardbioarrow_forward
