Explanation of Solution

The clearing of the forest cover of Hubbard Brook in the year 1965 and 1966 lead to a runoff of a large amount of water which was about 40% of the water present in the valley. The amount of nutrient that was eroded also increased. The change in the quantity of nitrogen in the disturbed valley was different from the undisturbed part of the valley. The undisturbed area has accumulated about 5kg per hectare of nitrate per year but in two years the runoff leads to a loss of about 53 kg of nitrate per year. The nitrate concentration in the stream water also rapidly increased due to runoff. The fertility of the soil in the valley decreased strikingly.
