Textbook Question
Chapter 5.5, Problem 1RQ
Briefly define a taper.
Expert Solution & Answer
To determine
The definition of taper.
Explanation of Solution
When there is a constant change in the diameter of a cylindrical part as that of a cone, it is termed as taper. It is commonly done in shafts to provide alignment. It is also used for securing work holding and tool holding devices. In machining process, it is necessary to have accurate alignment. Any inaccuracy can lead to improper machining and wastage of material and energy.
The two types of tapers are:
- Self holding taper: These types of tapers have the ability to both align and secure the mating parts. For example, Morse tapers, Jacobs tapers, and Jarno tapers.
- Self releasing taper: These types of tapers can only give alignment to mating parts. For example, tapers that are used in modern CNC milling machines.
