Chapter 54, Problem 1BC
Summary Introduction
To determine: The main threat faced by species today.
Introduction: All living organisms interact with the environment on different levels. An area or the environment where a particular species lives is called its habitat. A species is a group of similar organisms, having the ability to interbreed.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
There are almost 8.7 million species in the world. Out of these, 41,415 species are on the IUCN’s (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list. There are various factors that pose a threat to their existence, such as:
- • Human population growth: The exponential increase in the human population has led to the competition of
resources between humans and animals. - • Global warming and Climate change: The rise in pollution and biomagnifications has led to a rise in global warming. It led to an alteration in breeding and reproduction of many species.
- • Habitat destruction: Humans have encroached on the habitat of many species by building infrastructure and cities.
- • Overexploitation: This involves extensive hunting and fishing of various species for food, medicinal or recreational purposes.
- • Invasive species: With globalization and an increase of human interference, there have been cases where a species has been introduced to a new habitat. The shifted species compete with the native species for resources, and it increases their chances of going extinct.
