Blood agar is used for cultivation of fastidious organisms such as streptococcal species. The blood agar is used for determining the hemolytic capability of the microorganisms. The blood agar should be stabbed several times with the loop while streaking the bacterial sample obtained from the throat swab. This is because stabbing on the blood agar would facilitate the anaerobic environment for the streptococcal species to grow. Moreover, stabbing would also improve the progression of hemolysis.
