The proximate causes are immediate factors that include a physiological, genetic, neurological, and developmental process that controls the action performed by an individual in a given time. The ultimate causes are long-term factors or evolutionary changes that determine the overall species-specific behavior. The four questions posed by Tinbergen include causation of a behavior, development, function, and evolution of a behavior. Causation and development are proximate causes of behavior and function and evolution are ultimate causes of a behavior.
