Chapter 51, Problem 9TYU
SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY Scientists studying scrub jays found that “helpers” often assist mated pairs of birds by gathering food for their offspring.
(A) Propose a hypothesis to explain what advantage there might be for the helpers to engage in this behavior instead of seeking their own territories and mates.
(B) Explain how you would test your hypothesis. If it is correct, what results would you expect your tests to yield?

Suppose you spot two species of birds feeding side by side, eating seeds from the same plant. You begin to wonder whether competition is at work. Describe how you might design scientific research to address this question. What observations would you try to make at the outset? Would you try to manipulate the system to test your hypothesis that the two birds are competing? If so, how?
Many lines of evidence, including biochemical evidence, show that living birds are direct descendants of dinosaurs. A number of dinosaur lineages had feathered dinosaurs, not just the lineage that includes living birds. Do you think that is it justified to believe that all feathered dinosaurs had behaviors known from living birds? Such behaviors of birds include colonial nesting, sexual displays by males using feathers, males moving to display their ornamental feathers to female mates. Give a brief reason for your answer.

- I am doing an ecology research paper on Brown Anole Lizard Distribution, to perform my experiment I will choose 4 spots in a park such as a lake, a shaded tree, a boardwalk, and a sidewalk. then to quantify my results I will go three times a day for five weeks and count how many lizards I see in each area. I need help thinking of a testable hypothesis? This is often similar to your research question, however, it can be answered with the numbers you will collect. For example, a research question could be: Which is better, a park or a nature preserve? A testable hypothesis would be: Do parks or preserves have higher bird populations?arrow_forwardEVOLUTION LINK When a black-tailed prairie dog or other small animal dies, other prairie dogs bury it. Develop a hypothesis to explain how this behavior may be adaptive. How would you test this hypothesis?arrow_forwardDeCasper and Fifer (1980) provided evidence that babies recognize their mothers' voices shortly after birth. Using a nonnutritive nipple attached to a sensing apparatus, DeCasper and Fifer showed that newborns would suck more to hear a tape of their mother's voice compared to a tape of a stranger's voice. Because they were newborns, they must have become familiar with the mother's voice while still in the womb. In a follow-up study, DeCasper and Spence had 16 pregnant mothers read a three minute long passage from the Dr. Seuss book The Cat in the Hat to their fetuses twice a day for the last 6.5 weeks of pregnancy. The mothers were also recorded reading three minute excerpts from two other stories. By the time the babies were born, the researchers calculated, they had heard The Cat in the Hat for about 5 hours. DeCasper and Spence used their sucking test again. The babies sucked more to hear The Cat in the Hat, regardless of whether it was in their mother's voice or another woman's…arrow_forward
- You want to distinguish between two hypotheses to explain the patterns you see: 1) Males not feeding the young is an adaptation to dimorphism 2) If males don't feed the young in a species, it will allow them to become brightly colored To begin to address this question, map the characters changes in dimorphism and males feeding the young onto each of the trees on the previous page. - Think critically A student want to study the Moulting in mosquitoes. He very much clear about the mechanism of Moulting but unfortunately he forgot to choose the right hormone. He has two types of hormone, juvenile hormone and moult inhibiting hormone. He tries with both the hormone in mosquitoes and observed the results. What will be the results to the mosquitoes development with the juvenile hormone and the moult inhibiting hormone. It's not an assignment or complex question. It's an entamology question. Kindly answer and Don't reject it under complex or essay type. It's not comes under those category. - SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY Consider how the adaptive value of sea turtle migration has changed if, as a result of human activities, migration now puts sea turtles at greater risk than if they restricted their habitat to a single location. Discuss the possible evolutionary mechanisms by which the behavior of these species may (or may not) adapt to these environmental pressures. What conservation efforts should we take to increase the probability of successful migration?arrow_forwardIs sexual selection or natural selection the driver for the differences between males and females? a. In the hollyhock weevil (Rhopalapion longirostre) the females a have much longer rostrum. The length of rostrum is correlated with offspring survival but not mating frequency. b. In the marine iguana species (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) on the islands near Ecuador the males often exceed expected size on a given island. Male size is correlated with survival and number of mating events.arrow_forwardSCENARIO B Biological anthropologists have observed several chimpanzees in western Africa making tools to help them hunt. The chimpanzees were seen modifying branches and sticks into spears. They removed any leaves or small branches to make a smooth shaft. They also chewed on the ends of the branches to give them sharp points. They then thrust the sharpened branches like spears into tree trunks, where small primates called galagos make sleeping nests. Although it remains unclear how successful the chimpanzees are in actually killing galagos, multiple members of the chimpanzee group have been observed producing the spears.arrow_forward
