Chapter 51, Problem 1RQ
To determine

Operation of diac.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Diac has a set voltage depending on the material used. When voltage of that particular value is applied, diac allow current to pass. It operates in both the direction of current flow unlike diode. Once the required voltage is given, it conducts in both direction.

The diac have negative resistance. Due to this, the minimum voltage value needed to keep the diac in on state is less than that of the minimum voltage needed to start the operation of diac. Therefore, the diac starts operation at a particular voltage value and stops when voltage is less than the conduction level.

1. Two long rods of the same diameter-one made of brass (k=85w/m.k) and the other made of copper (k=375 w/m.k) have one of their ends inserted into a furnace (as shown in the following figure). Both rods are exposed to the same environment. At a distance of 105 mm from the furnace, the temperature of the brass rod is 120°C. At what distance from the furnace will the same temperature be reached in the copper rod? Furnace 105 mm T₁ Brass rod ⑪ h Too- x2- Ti Copper rod
