Chapter 50, Problem 4SA
When the brakes are applied on a moving car, the frictional parts (brake or) are forced against the rotating parts of the car (brake or). The friction causes the rotating parts to slow down and stop. Just as the energy of the rotating parts is called kinetic, the friction used to stop them is called kinetic.

Which of the following statements about friction is FALSE?
A Friction force is always less than the force required to prevent motion.
The total frictional force is dependent on the area of contact between the two surfaces.
The direction of frictional force on a surface is such as to oppose the tendency of one surface to slide relative to the
other.
The magnitude of the frictional force is equal to the force which tends to move the body till the limiting value is
D
reached.
Dry friction:
O Produces a force normal to the surfaces of contact.
Occurs only when two objects are moving past each other.
Occurs when objects are in a condition of sliding or a tendency to slide.
O Occurs only when two objects are in a condition of a tendency to slide.
When stopping a car on an icy or wet road... or a dry road, for that matter... is it better
to push the brake pedal hard enough to lock the wheels and make them slide? Or to push
gently so that the wheels continue to roll? What is the point behind "anti-lock disk brakes"?
Which coefficient of friction u, or uk is relevant to which case?
(hint: start by considering the forces on different points on the wheel in each case, and calculate
the largest possible deceleration for both conditions)
