Sucralfate (Carafate) is a mucosal protectant used to treat peptic ulcer and active stress ulcerations. If the sucralfate contact with stomach acid it is converted into aluminum hydroxide and sulfate anions. Secretion of bicarbonate base and mucus is stimulated by the aluminum salt. The sulfated molecules bind to tissue proteins in the eroded and ulcerated areas and prevent them from stomach acid. Binding of sucralfate to the epidermal growth factor (in the gastric tissues) leads to ulcer healing. Also, sucralfate promotes the prostaglandin secretion and that has a mucoprotective function. Intake of sucralfate on an empty stomach treats peptic ulcer, stress ulcers, and esophageal erosions.
