(a)
To evaluate:
An experiment was designed and conducted to analyze the uptake of sucrose in the plant cells. (a) The hypothesis for the decrease in pH, if plant cells are immersed in a sucrose solution. (b) The result obtained, if an inhibitor of the ATP regeneration was added in the beaker once the pH reached a steady level.
Introduction:
The plant cells were immersed in a sucrose solution in a beaker. The movement of the sucrose and water ions will take place by the process of diffusion and osmosis respectively in the beaker. The hypothesis given by the scientists proposes the movement of the hydrogen and sucrose ions inside the plant cells through the plasma membrane with the help of the co-transporter protein channels.
To evaluate: The hypothesis for the decrease in pH, if the plant cells are immersed in a sucrose solution.
(b)
To determine: The result that was obtained, if an inhibitor of ATP regeneration was added in the beaker once the pH reached a steady level.

- Consider a cell membrane. In order to survive, the cell must move nutrients across the membrane and it must move waste products out of the membrane. Describe the strategies available to the cell for the transport of materials. Describe these strategies. Indicate what happens when equilibrium is reached for each strategy.arrow_forward1. Would you expect water molecules to move faster when there is a HIGH concentration gradient or a LOW concentration gradient? Water molecules would move faster when there is a high concentration gradient because the pressure for the molecules in the high concentration to reach equilibrium increases since there are more molecules there than in the low concentration. So as the molecules move down the concentration gradient faster to equalize the concentration on both sides due to the increased pressure, the rate of diffusion increases.arrow_forward
- What might happen to the contractile vacuoles in a paramecium if the organism were transferred from the culture medium into sea water? Hint use osmosis in your response.arrow_forwardWhat is the independent variable of the experiment?arrow_forwardTo study the mechanism of SERCA, you prepare membrane vesicles containing this protein oriented such that its ATP binding site is on the outer surface of the vesicle. To measure pump activity, you use an assay that detects the formation of inorganic phosphate in the medium. When you add calcium and ATP to the medium, you observe phosphate production for only a short period of time. Only after the addition of calcimycin , a molecule that makes membranes selectively permeable to calcium, do you observe sustained phosphate production. Explain.arrow_forward
