The three mineralogical or geological classifications and the formation of rocks.
Explanation of Solution
Natural aggregates result from the breakdown of large rock masses. Summarize the three basic types of rocks as below.
- Igneous rocks
- Sedimentary rocks
- Metamorphic rocks
Explain the formation of rocks as below.
Igneous rocks:
The igneous rocks are produced as a result of volcanic action thr ough hardening or crystallizing molten material, namely magma. The magma cools with the expoure to air or water present within the earth’s crust. The extrusive igneous rocks forms over the surface and intrusive igneous rocks are formed with cooling beneath the ground surface. The extrusive rocks cool faster than the intrusive rocks.
Sedimentary rocks:
These rocks are based on the deposited mass of material with the help of wind, water, glaciers or direct transport of materials. It is formed from the deposits of disintegrated existing rocks or inorganic remains of marine animals. The particles bind together by natural cementing.
Metamorphic rocks:
The igneous or sedimentary rocks are formed though the process of disintegration inside the Earth’s crust with the exposiure to some form of heat and pressure. It will produce a grain structure of a metamorphic rock.
