Chapter 4.S, Problem 5P

The guidance system of a ship is controlled by a computer that has three major modules. In order for the compute to function properly, all three modules must function. Two of the modules have reliabilities of .97, and the other has a reliability of .99.

a. What is the reliability of the computer?

b. A backup computer identical to the one being used will be installed to improved overall reliability. Assuming the new computer automatically function if the main one fail, determine the reliability.

c. If the backup computer must be activated by a switch in the event that the first computer fails, and the switch has a reliability of .98, what is the overall reliability of the system? (Both the switch and the backup computer must function in order for the backup to take over.)

A floor cleaning robot contains 4 modules that are critical to its operation. The modules and their individual reliabilities are listed below. Movement module 0.98 Data Storage Module 0.999 Learning Module 0.99 Vision Module 0.94 What is the probability that the system will be up and running? Suppose this number is too low and it is desired to improve the reliability through redundant elements. What would be the new reliability from each one of these changes? a. back up the Vision module with an identical module. b. back up the movement module with an identical module, but not the vision module.
An office security system at PAC Ltd has two component parts, both of which must work for the system to function. Part 1 has a reliability of 80 percent, and part 2 has a reliability of 98 percent. Compute the reliability of the system.
The remaining part of the case and question below : Fortunately, shipboard emergencies are infrequent, but when they do occur they are problematic. For instance, the Costa Concordia hit a rock and sank off Italy, causing32 people to die. A generator fire on the Carnival Triumph stranded 4000 passengers for four days. Sporadically, viruses causing diarrhea and vomiting strike cruise ships, causingCarnival to take an infected ship out of service to eradicate all traces of the virus by sanitizing virtually every object on board.Although these incidents are costly, the cruise industry has a fatality rate three times better than airlines. Economic Issues Spending for a cruise is generally considered discretionary. During recessions, people are more apt to take shorter cruises and to embark from nearby ports rather than flying to faraway points of departure. Interestingly, however, in comparison with other segments of the tourist industry, cruise lines have fared well during economic…
