Explanation The mechanism by which the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland integrate regulatory functions is as follows: The hormones secreted by posterior pituitary are oxytocin (OT) and antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Both hormones are produced in the hypothalamus, stored and secreted by the posterior pituitary. ADH and oxytocin are primarily produced by the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus, respectively. ADH and OT are released when hypothalamus sends nerve signals from the supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus along the hypothalamo-hypophyseal tract, respectively. The hormones regulated by hypothalamus are known as tropic hormones. They are responsible for the stimulation of other endocrine glands or cells for the secretion of other hormones. The hypothalamus releases some hormones into the hypothalamo-hypophyseal portal system that can control specific cells of the anterior pituitary. This results in the release of their hormones within the normal circulation. The releasing hormones of the hypothalamus stimulate the production and secretion of specific anterior pituitary hormones, whereas the inhibiting hormones inhibit the production and secretion of specific anterior pituitary hormones...
