Question
Chapter 48, Problem 2DAA
Summary Introduction
To determine: The PCB concentration in the women that influence likely to give birth to daughters.
Concept introduction:
Imbalance in sex ratio may arise as an effect of various factors such as natural factors, exposure to various contaminated chemicals, pesticides, and other environmental contaminants. Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are widespread environmental contaminants that possess teratogenic and oncogenic properties. These chemicals increase the male/female ratio. The maternal contamination with PCBs is also connected with low birth weight and shorter height in males.

Bovine somatotropin (BST) Is a growth hormone approved to use in the United States to increase milk production in dairy cattle. Currently, It's use is banned in Canada. Independent studies completed by the FDA and world health organization have concluded that milk and meat from cows treated with BST are safe for human consumption.
Researchers have shown the trace amount of BST can be found in milk and meat produced by BST-treated cows. BST can also be found in milk from untreated cows as it is naturally produced in the Kouse pituitary gland. BST has the same function and cows as a human growth hormone does in humans.
Charlie, and animal rights activist, was concerned with the use of BST and dairy cows. She argued that BST increases the likelihood of cancer and diabetes mellitus in cattle.
Do you agree or disagree with her? Explain why you agree or disagree with Charlie.
Pollutants such as halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons (HAHs)are usually spotty in their distributions in bodies of water. Thuseven if HAHs are present, fish might be able to avoid beingexposed to them. Suppose you want to determine if the fishliving in an industrialized harbor are in fact more exposed toHAHs than fish in a more pristine harbor. Why might a study ofliver P450 enzymes be particularly useful for your purposes?

- The American Heart Association and other health organizations have concluded that consumers should get their antioxidants from foods rather than supplements. They add that taking supplements may even be harmful. Supplement manufacturers claim that such statements are unfair and that their natural botanical extracts provide numerous health benefits. In fact, some suggest that beneficial effects can only be achieved by taking high-dose supplements. Given that there are currently no DRI defining the kinds of antioxidants or the daily quantities needed, how might you ensure a healthy intake of antioxidants? If you decide to take an antioxidant supplement, how might you research the product to determine its safety and effectiveness?arrow_forwardBovine somatotropin (BST) is a growth hormone approved for use in the United States to increase milk production in dairy cattle. BPA-free plastics are often manufactured with a related compound, bisphenol S (BPS), which has effects similar to BPA. Imagine you are part of a group lobbying for increased control of BPA and BPS in manufactured products. How would you best summarize the results of this study to help support your case? A. I read a study once that said BPA was bad. B. A 1998 study from Case Western University proved that BPA causes birth defects. C. A 1998 study found that increasing exposure to BPA-leaching plastic sources increased the percentage of abnormalities in mouse oocytes, which could lead to an increased risk of birth defects. D. A 1998 study found that even the smallest exposure to BPA-leaching plastics causes a high percentage of abnormalities in mouse oocytes, which could lead…arrow_forward

Methanogens produce methane, which traps more heat than carbon dioxide and may contribute to global warming. Methanogens convert carbon dioxide into methane, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and effectively decreasing global warming.
