Figure 37.17 Plant responses to herbivore attack. (1) Leaf damage induces defensive responses such as the release of volatile compounds. (2a) These compounds trigger defenses in undamaged parts of the same plant. (2b) Such volatile compounds may also induce defenses in neighboring plants, which then become less vulnerable to herbivores.
