Chapter 47, Problem 8NERQ
Summary Introduction
Multiple sclerosis is also known as demyelinating diseases because the insulating covers (myelin) located on the nerve cells (brain and spinal cord) are damaged. The immune system of the body affects the myelin cover and that leads to a disruption in the communication between the brain and other parts of the body. This damage results in the physical and mental abnormalities. The signs and symptoms (numbness in one or more limbs, vision loss, pain, fatigue, and dizziness) are based on the severity of the nerve damage. Natalizumab, mitoxantrone, and fingolimod are used to treat multiple sclerosis.
