To explain: The reason for which alveolar air differs in composition from atmospheric air.
Introduction: The process of gas exchange occurs between an organism and its environment is known as respiration. For cellular respiration, most of the animal cells need a continuous oxygen supply. During respiration, oxygen is inhaled from the environment and transported to individual cells of the body and carbon dioxide produced by the cell during cellular respiration is exhaled from the body to the environment.

- How does the structure of alveoli maximize gas exchange?arrow_forwardWhat drives oxygen from the air spaces in alveoli, through tissue fluid, and across capillary epithelium? What drives carbon dioxide in the opposite direction?arrow_forwardDue to its partial pressure gradient, carbon dioxide diffuses from cells into tissue fluid and into the ________; in the lungs, carbon dioxide diffuses into the ________. a. alveoli; bronchioles b. bloodstream; bronchioles c. alveoli; bloodstream d. bloodstream; alveoliarrow_forward
- The respiratory components of the medulla consist of which of the following? Dorsal respiratory group Apneustic center Ventral respiratory group Pneumotaxic center 1 only 2 only 1 and 3 only 2 and 4 onlyarrow_forwardWhich of the following prevents the alveoli from collapsing? residual volume tidal volume expiratory reserve volume inspiratory reserve volumearrow_forwardHow do nerve impulses from the brain regulate ventilation of the lungs? How are the rate and depth of breathing controlled?arrow_forward
- A smoker develops damage to several alveoli that then can no longer function. How does this affect gas exchange?arrow_forwardWe inhale oxygen when we breathe and exhale carbon dioxide. What is the oxygen used for and where does the carbon dioxide come from?arrow_forwardWhat reactions enhance the transport of carbon dioxide throughout the body? How is carbon dioxide moved out of the body?arrow_forward
- Is carbon dioxide transported from the bloodstream to the alveoli or from the alveoli to the bloodstream, and if so, why does it go in this way (based on partial pressure)?arrow_forwardIn the science fiction movie, The Abyss, a diver is able to breathe while his head is in a specially prepared liquid pumped into a water-tight helmet attached to a suit, thus allowing him to dive without an air tank and at greater depths than possible for scuba divers. Is this purely fiction, or is it at least theoretically possible? Explain, thinking about the characteristics of alveoli and alveolar gas exchange. Assuming it is possible, describe the characteristics of the liquid in terms of its oxygen pressure and concentration. Has this been successful?arrow_forwardwhy does a decrease in alveolar ventilation decrease alveolar PO2 if metabolism remains unchanged? While an increase in metabolism decreases alveolar PO2 if alveolar ventilation remains unchanged?arrow_forward
