Textbook Question
Chapter 44, Problem 1RQ
Geothermal heat pumps, or water-source heat pumps, are classified as either _____loop or _____loop systems.
Expert Solution & Answer
To determine
Classification of geothermal heat pump or water source heat pumps.
Answer to Problem 1RQ
Open loop and closed loop.
Explanation of Solution
Geothermal heat pumps are generally classified into open loop and closed loop systems:
Open loop systems, also known as water source systems utilize the water from the earth as a heat transfer medium and extract back the water back to the earth.
However, closed loop system, also known as earth-coupled systems. In such systems, plastic pipes are buried within earth, lakes or ponds, and a heat transfer fluid is circulated through the pipes.
