Case summary:
A nursing student has been assigned to care for person MH, a 56-year-old woman who had surgery 2 days ago. As the student walks into her room to check if she is comfortable and whether she needs particularly at that point of time. The patient asked to stop the beeping sound of the machine because this sound makes the patient restless. The nursing student doesn’t know how to stop the beeping sound of the machine. The student worried that the patient is going to think that she is incompetent. The nursing student doesn’t know what to do in this situation.

Explanation of Solution
The criteria that the nursing student evaluates the successful outcome are as follows:
- Personal integrity is maintained.
- Professional integrity remains intact.
- The patient is now able to take rest and expresses relief that the beeping sound has stopped.
The first two criteria would not be agreed because the feeling of insult and incompetent professional nurse for not able to stop the beep sound of the machine. This is because in today’s environment technology has been changing day to day and most of the nurses are facing the same situation in their carrier. Learning in the health care field is an ongoing process. Moreover, not knowing how to work with a machine does not mean that this nurse is incompetent with other nurses.
The third criteria would be agreed as the patient’s problem would be resolved by stopping the beeping sound of the machine.
