Chapter 43.2, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To discuss: Two advantages of memory cells while encountering pathogen for the second time.

Concept introduction:

“B” lymphocytes and “T” lymphocytes are found in the blood. During the first invasion of a specific pathogen, both “B and T” cells divide rapidly and produce numerous identical cell clones. Some cells in that group are short lived, act directly upon the invading pathogen, and destroy them. The remaining cells are long lived, and they have registered the identity of that specific pathogen. They are called memory cells.

Summary of the role of the innate system in defense against invading pathogens.
Pathogenic organisms cause damage to the host by a variety of mechanisms, depending on the category of the pathogen and its mode of replication in the host. Give an example of two different types of pathogens that are unlikely to be dealt with by the same mechanism of immune protection.
Some pathogens invade cells; others invade tissue spaces. Explain how innate responses differ for both types of pathogens
