Chapter 43, Problem 4O
Summary Introduction

To discuss:

The mechanism of action, cautions, indications, contraindications, dosages, adverse effects, routes of administration, and interactions of anthelmintic, antiprotozoal, and antimalarial drugs.

Concept introduction:

Helmints are comprised of complex multicellular structures. Therefore, the anthelmintic drugs are very specific in destroying the worms. Before administering the anthelmintic drugs, the causative worm (in an infected host) must be identified. This is achieved by analyzing the samples such as urine, sputum, feces, tissue, and blood.

A drug that acts against malaria is referred to as an antimalarial drug. The quinine (original drug) acts by inhibiting the reproduction and growth of the malarial parasites (Plasmodium), which thrives in the red blood cells of the victims.

Numerous drugs that are used to treat malarial infections are also used to prevent protozoal infections. This includes pyrimethamine, chloroquine, atovaquone, and primaquine. Pentamidine, metronidazole, and iodoquinol are some of the antiprotozoal drugs used to treat non-malarial parasites.
