Chapter 43, Problem 2Q
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

The reason for the higher titer value of Convalescent sera than Acute sera.

Introduction:

Human blood comprises of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The serum can be defined as the plasma devoid of fibrinogens, red and white blood cells. The serum contains proteins, antibodies, antigens and hormones. For the purpose of diagnosis of various diseases serum of the patient is used. The serum contains antibodies which are the main reason for its usage in antibody titer tests like ELISA.

If the titer value obtained from the test is higher, it is an indication that the patient's immune response is good and the body contains a higher amount of antibodies whereas low titer values represent lesser antibodies and lesser immune response correspondingly.

What is the significance of a rise in titer of specific antibodies in serum samples taken at different times?
In the table below, T cell proliferation was measured after 4 days of incubation of T cells, APCs, +/- SEB. If one isolated the T cells at the end of the incubation for the six conditions in which robust proliferation was seen (Rows 2, 3, 5–8), and stained the T cells with each antibody (separately) from a panel of antibodies that recognize each of the mouse Vb domains (i.e., an antibody to Vb1, an antibody to Vb2, etc), what result would be expected?
With the preventive measure available to combat COVID-19, the term, “herd immunity” is often used. What is herd or population immunity? How is it achieved?
