Dosage Calculations. In Exercises 21–26, use the data in the accompanying table, which lists the numbers of correct and wrong dosage amounts calculated by physicians. In a research experiment, one group of physicians was given bottles of epinephrine labeled with a concentration of “1 milligram in 1 milliliter solution,” and another group of physicians was given bottles labeled with a ratio of “1 milliliter of a 1:1000 rotation.” The two labels describe the exact same amount, and the physicians were instructed to administer 0.12 milligrams of epinephrine. The results were reported in The New York Times.

Review the following rates. Determine what to call each one, then calculate it using the data provided in Table. 1. Unintentional-injury-specific mortality rate for the entire population. Calculate cause-specific mortality rate. 2. All-cause mortality rate for 25–34 years old. Calculate the age-specific mortality rate. 3. All-cause mortality among males. Calculate the sex-specific mortality rate. 4.Unintentional-injury specific mortality among 25 to 34 years old males. Several months ago, I was interviewed by such a company while shopping at a mall. I was asked about my exercise habits and whether or not I'd be interested in buying a video/DVD designed to teach stretching exercises. I fall into the male, 18 – 35-years-old category, and I guessed that, like me, many males in that category would not be interested in a stretching video. My friend Diane falls in the female, older-than-35 category, and I was thinking that she might like the stretching video. After being interviewed, I looked at the interviewer's results. Of the 93 people in my market category who had been interviewed, 17 said they would buy the product, and of the 113 people in Diane's market category, 34 said they would buy it. The steel is cut with a diamond saw and requires the resulting parts to be within 10.005 inch of the length specified by the automobile company. Data are collected from a sample of 50 steel parts and are shown in the following table. The measurement reported is the difference in inches between the actual length of the steel part, as measured by a laser measurement device, and the specified length of the steel part. For example, the first value, -0.003, represents a steel part that is 0.003 inch shorter than the specified length. Complete parts a through c Click the icon to view the data table. a. They come from various socioeconomic backgrounds and do not drink wine, but they are all willing to try it for the sake of the experiment. You want to divide them into two groups (control and treatment), and you will monitor their health for four decades. Part A: Which of the following is an acceptable method for dividing the volunteers into groups that will minimize confounding in the long-term results? Put all of the participants under the age of 40 in the control group and all of the participants over the age of 40 in the treatment group. Put all of the participants under the age of 40 in the treatment group and all of the participants over the age of 40 in the control group.
