Chapter 43, Problem 1FIB
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The plants have “ground”, “dermal”, “vascular”, and “meristematic tissues”. These tissues are responsible for various functions that directly contribute to the completion of plant’s life cycle.

Answer to Problem 1FIB

Correct answer:

Plants grow through the division of meristem cells and differentiation of the resulting daughter cells. These dividing cells reside in two locations: at the tip of a shoot or root, called the apical meristem and in cylinders along the sides of roots and stems, called lateral meristem. The apical meristem is responsible for primary growth and the lateral meristem is responsible for secondary growth.

Explanation of Solution

The meristematic tissues are the tissues that possess the maximum ability for growth and regeneration. These small cells grow quickly and in addition exhibit dense cytoplasm.

The apical meristems are located in axillary and terminal outgrowths, buds, and shoots. In addition, these tissues are also present tips of roots. These tissues govern the elongation of apices of shoots and roots and this is primary growth.

The lateral meristematic tissues are present in longitudinal sections of roots and shoots. The secondary growth occurs by the thickening of lateral meristem and they provide strength to plant tissues.

Conclusion

The meristems are associated with the growth of plants. The primary growth occurs by the division of apical meristems, while the secondary growth occurs by the division of lateral meristems

Imagine that you are a clinical geneticist. Your colleague is an oncologist who wants your help explaining the basics of genetics to their patient, who will be undergoing genetic testing in the coming weeks for possible acute myeloid leukemia (AML) induced by the radiation she had several years ago for breast cancer. Write a 1,050- to 1,225-word memo to your colleague. Include the following in your memo: An explanation of the molecular structure of DNA and RNA, highlighting both similarities and differences  A description of the processes of transcription and translation An explanation of the differences between leading and lagging strands and how the DNA is replicated in each strand Reponses to the following common questions patients might ask about this type of genetic testing and genetic disorder: Does AML run in families? What genes are tested for?
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: What are some potential consequences that could result if the processes of replication, transcription, and translation don’t function correctly? Provide an example of how you might explain these consequences in terms that patients might understand.
