Relative Risk and Odds Ratio In a clinical trial of 2103 subjects treated with Nasonex, 26 reported headaches. In a control group of 1671 subjects given a placebo, 22 reported headaches. Denoting the proportion of headaches in the treatment group by pt and denoting the proportion of headaches in the control (placebo) group by pc, the relative risk is pt/pc. The relative risk is a measure of the strength of the effect of the Nasonex treatment. Another such measure is the odds ratio, which is the ratio of the odds in favor of a headache for the treatment group to the odds in favor of a headache for the control (placebo) group, found by evaluating the following:
The relative risk and odds ratios are commonly used in medicine and epidemiological studies. Find the relative risk and odds ratio for the headache data. What do the results suggest about the risk of a headache from the Nasonex treatment?

- A research study examined the effects of a new drug versus an old drug on hypertension. There were 172 people enrolled in the new drug group, and 125 of them were hypertensive. For the old drug group, 165 people were enrolled and of those, 76 were hypertensive. Was there a difference in the proportion of people who were hypertensive between the new drug and the old drug? In a control group of 1572 subjects given a placebo, 26 reported headaches. Denoting the proportion of headaches in the treatment group by pt and denoting the proportion of headaches in the control (placebo) group by pc, the relative risk is pt/pc. The relative risk is a measure of the strength of the effect of the drug treatment. Subjects were sampled based on their clinical change to treatment and then asked whether they had a high or low degree of infiltration. The degree of infiltration measures a type of skin damage. We will use clinical change response scores {-1, 0, 1, 2, 3}. The question of interest is whether degree of infiltration is associated with clinical change. (a) Compute the sample proportions of having a high degree of infiltration for each clinical change group? What type of variable is Clinical Change? (B)Conduct a Cochran-Armitage trend test at the 5% significance level to determine whether there is an association between degree of infiltration and clinical change. (C)Now, ignore the fact that clinical change is an ordinal variable. Conduct a chi-squared test for association between degree of infiltration and clinical change at the 5% significance…arrow_forward
- Passive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has been associated with growth suppression and an increased frequency of respiratory tract infections in normal children. Is this association more pronounced in children with cystic fibrosis? To answer this question, 43 children (18 girls and 25 boys) attending a 2-week summer camp for cystic fibrosis patients were studied (New England Journal of Medicine, Sept. 20, 1990). Among several variables measured were the child's weight percentile (y) and the number of cigarettes smoked per day in the child's home (x). a. For the 18 girls, the coefficient of correlation between y and x was reported as r = –.50. Interpret - this result. b. Refer to part a. The p-value for testing Ho: p = 0 against H;: p # 0 was reported as p = .03. n Interpret this result. c. For the 25 boys, the coefficient of correlation between y and x was reported asr = -.12. The study consisted of 90 participants. 30 participants were randomly assigned to eat a heart healthy diet, 30 were randomly assigned to a heart healthy exercise routine, and 30 were randomly assigned to do nothing and serve as a control. After a month of their assigned intervention, participants' blood pressure was measured. Describe a study that would utilize an independent t test as the test statistic.arrow_forwardSocial functioning is the ability for an individual to interact or adapt in a normal or usual way in social environments. Albert et al. (2007) asked if relatives of patients with OCD are as healthy as those in general healthy populations. They measured the social functioning of relatives using a 36-item survey with scores ranging from 0 (worst possible health) to 100 (best possible health). The mean score for the general healthy population was 77.43. Using the sample data, test whether there was a difference. Scores: 20, 60, 48, 92, 50, 82, 48, 90, 30, 68, 43, 54, 60, 62, 94, 67, 63, 85 State hypotheses 2. Set the criteria using α= 0.05 3. Calculate t 4.
