Chapter 40, Problem 1.1BGL
Summary Introduction
To label: The embryonic structures given in the figure of the text book.
Introduction: Fertilization is the fusion of the egg and sperm to form the diploid zygote. The fertilized zygote divides rapidly to form an embryo.
Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 1.1BGL
Pictorial representation: The first week of development is shown in Fig 1:
Fig.1: The first week of development fertilization to blastocyst
Explanation of Solution
- 1. Secondary oocyte: The primary oocyte undergoes meiosis I to form secondary oocyte.
- 2. Fertilization of secondary oocyte: The secondary oocyte is fertilized by the sperm to form the ootid.
- 3. 2-cell stage of zygote: The two-cell stage of the embryo consists of 16 blastomeres.
- 4. 4-cell stage of zygote: The 4-cell embryo is formed by the cleavage of the two-cell embryo.
- 5. Morula: The morula is formed 3‑4 days after fertilization. It is a mass of 16 cells in a cavity present within the zona pellucida.
- 6. Blastocyst: The blastocyst consists of inner cell mass surrounded by the outer layer called trophoblast.
- 7. Implantation of blastocyst: The blastocyst moves through the uterus, attaches to the uterine wall, and develops into the fetus.
