To draw: Lewis dot structure of silicon (Si).
Introduction: “ Every element has smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of an element”. This smallest unit is called atom. There are three subatomic particles of an atom. These are electrons, protons, and neutrons. Proton and neutron are present in the central part of an atom called nucleus. The electrons revolve around the nucleus in different electronic shells that can be drawn in form of electron distribution diagram as given in fig. 1(a) and fig. 2(a). The electrons present in outermost shell are called valence electrons that can be drawn in dotted form as Lewis dot structure of an atom, as given in fig.1 (b) and fig.2 (b).
To interpret: The properties of silicon that makes it suitable for silicon based life.

- According to the OparinHaldane hypothesis, the atmosphere when life began was believed to be composed primarily of the following substances that contain the maximum number of electrons: a. H2O, N2, and CO2. b. H2, H2O, NH3, and CH4. c. H2O, N2, O2, and CO2. d. O2 and no H2. e. H2 only.arrow_forwardTest Your Understanding Know and Comprehend 4. 11H and 13H have (a) different chemical properties because they have different atomic numbers (b) the same chemical properties because they have the same number of valence electrons (c) different chemical properties because they differ in their number of protons and electrons (d) the same chemical properties because they have the same atomic mass (e) the same chemical properties because they have the same number of protons, electrons, and neutronsarrow_forwardTest Your Understanding Know and Comprehend 5. The orbitals composing an atoms valence electron shell (a) are arranged as concentric spheres (b) contain the atoms least energetic electrons (c) may change shape when covalent bonds are formed (d) never contain more than one electron each (e) more than one of the preceding is correctarrow_forward
- A. The first shell corresponds to the first energy level, and it can hold up to 2 electrons. Hydrogen has one proton, so it has 1 electron and one vacancy. A helium atom has 2 protons, 2 electrons, and no vacancies. B. The second shell corresponds to the second energy level, and it can hold up to 8 electrons. Carbon has 6 electrons, so its first shell is full. Its second shell has 4 electrons and four vacancies. Oxygen has 8 electrons and two vacancies. Neon has 10 electrons and no vacancies. C. The third shell corresponds to the third energy level, and it can hold up to 8 electrons. A sodium atom has 11 electrons, so its first two shells are full; the third shell has one electron. Thus, sodium has seven vacancies. Chlorine has 17 electrons and one vacancy. Argon has 18 electrons and no vacancies. - The pure “fire air” consumed by a burning candle in a sealed glass jar, or by a mouse during aerobic respiration (in experiments conducted by Joseph Priestley), contains which of the following elements? hydrogen and carbon (derived from the C6H12O6 produced by plants during photosynthesis) carbon and oxygen (derived from the CO2 consumed by plants during photosynthesis) carbon only (derived from the C6H12O6 produced by plants during photosynthesis) hydrogen only (derived from the H2O produced by plants during photosynthesis) oxygen only (derived from the O2 produced by plants during photosynthesis)arrow_forwardThe molecules for fossil fuels like gasoline, diesel, and natural gas are made only of carbon and hydrogen atoms; for this reason, they are called "hydrocarbons". A carbon atom can form 4 bonds, hydrogen 1, thus the simplest hydrocarbon is CH4. It's a gas at room temperature, and it's the fossil fuel called natural gas when used at home in gas appliances and it's called CNG (compressed natural gas) when used to power cars and buses. In the image below, what is the technical name for CH4? CH4 + 202 CO2 + 2 H20 Methane Охудen Carbon Dioxide Water Combustion Reaction ::arrow_forwardWith the advent of photosynthesis, the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere has varied over the eons up to 35 % by volume, theoretically leading to larger plants and animals. The current concentration is 21 % oxygen, 78 % nitrogen, and 1 % other gases such as argon and carbon dioxide. Assuming an atmosphere of 16 % oxygen, to the nearest whole number (no decimal) what would be the ideal volume of water (in mL) initially placed in a 25 mL graduated cylinder (assuming the graduation goes up to the lip of the container) for optimal combustion (biggest explosion) if we collected pure hydrogen by displacement as in this experiment? Make sure to account for the stoichiometry of the combustion, that all gases involved are diatomic, and that equal moles of different ideal gases occupy equal volumes at the same temperature.
