To determine

(a)

The orbital velocity of Earth’s Satellite (time required to completes a circle around its orbit once.)

Answer to Problem 9P

Orbital velocity of Earth’s Satellite is 3.07 ×103m/s

Explanation of Solution

Given Info:

Distance of Earth’s Satellite from Earth center = 42,230 km

  G = 6.67×1011m3/s2kg ; mearth=5.98×1024 kg

Formula Used:

  1. V=ar=G mEarth/r
  2. a=V2/r
  3. FGravity= G.mearth.msat/r2
  4. F=ma

Calculation:

  • Orbital velocity is a product of universal gravitational constant. Distance of satellite from earth centre and gravitational mass.
  • To find the velocity, we need acceleration which keeps the object moving in a circle and we can find it from the force of gravity.
  • Force of gravity cab be calculated from following :-

  FGravity= G.mearth.msat/r2

Where, G = Gravitational constant

m earth = mass of earth

m sat= mass of satellite

r = distance between earth and satellite

We know that, from Newton’s second Law, acceleration is,

  F=ma

But in case of planet, only a gravitational force is acting on satellite. No other force is present hence summation sign is not needed.

mearth. a =G.mearth.msat/r2

 a sat =G.mearth/r2 ...... (Dividing by m sat on both sides)

Acceleration in the middle of circle to keep object in circular motion is given by,

a = V2 /r

  V2=a.r

V=a.r

To find velocity of satellite, put acceleration of satellite in above formula,

V=G.mearth.r/r2

V=G.mearth/r

We have,

  r = 42230 km = 4.223 x  104km                                       = 4.223 x  104x  103m                                       = 4.223 x  107m

V =6.67 × 1011m3/s2kg)( 5.98 X  10 24 kg)/ 4.223 x 107m

V=3.0732X103m/s

Conclusion:

Orbital velocity Earth ‘Satellite is 3.0732 × 103m/s

To determine

Time required completing a circle around its orbit once?

Answer to Problem 9P

Time required to complete a circle around one orbit is 8.

Explanation of Solution

Given info:

Distance of earth satellite from earth centre = 42230 km

Formula used:

  c = 2πr

  t=cv

Calculation:

Time required to complete a circle around one orbit of satellite is a ratio of distance travelled in one orbit to the velocity of satellite.

t=cv

C is distance travelled in one orbit. It is nothing but the circumference of circular orbit.

  c = 2πr              = 2 x π x ( 4.223 x  10 7 )              = 2.653 x  108m

Put value of c in

  t=cv

  T=2.653x108/3.0732x103T=86326.95secT=8.632×104s

Conclusion:

Time required for Satellite to complete one orbit is 8.632×104s

13.87 ... Interplanetary Navigation. The most efficient way to send a spacecraft from the earth to another planet is by using a Hohmann transfer orbit (Fig. P13.87). If the orbits of the departure and destination planets are circular, the Hohmann transfer orbit is an elliptical orbit whose perihelion and aphelion are tangent to the orbits of the two planets. The rockets are fired briefly at the depar- ture planet to put the spacecraft into the transfer orbit; the spacecraft then coasts until it reaches the destination planet. The rockets are then fired again to put the spacecraft into the same orbit about the sun as the destination planet. (a) For a flight from earth to Mars, in what direction must the rockets be fired at the earth and at Mars: in the direction of motion, or opposite the direction of motion? What about for a flight from Mars to the earth? (b) How long does a one- way trip from the the earth to Mars take, between the firings of the rockets? (c) To reach Mars from the…
