The apical surface of epithelial cells possesses extensions such as microvilli and cilia that perform distinct functions. The whip like extensions are known as cilia and the finger like extensions are called microvilli. Cilia is engaged in important functions and the inability of cilia to perform their functions can lead to various disorders such as Kartagener’s syndrome.
