Concept explainers
Case summary:
Person X was excited and nervous about her mental health clinical rotation. As she was new, staffs were helpful and been cooperative to a greater extent. She started her training in developing the nurse-patient relationship.
Patient CR, a 17 years old girl was admitted in the unit for attempting suicide. As she is unable to speak English properly, other nurses asked Person X to speak with her because Person X knows Spanish. While speaking with her, Person X found that she did not like to live with her sister because her sister used to abuse her and kept on reminding her about the sacrifices she made for her.
Her sister always reminded the things she got for her and asked her to pay for all those things later, but then she has to live with her sister because her mom passed away recently. After speaking with her, Person X found that she does not want to return back to her sister’s house.
Unfortunately, she was not considered to be an adult. Hence, legally, it is necessary to consult with the sister. However, it also seems that she was not willing to go back to her sister’s house or else she would be taken to foster’s home. Although they will take care of her only until she turns to 18 years that is only till the end of this month. She was not ready for such a radical change.
Characters in the case:
- Person X (nurse)
- Patient CR
To discuss:
Whether there is anything more that would have been done to acknowledge the future of Patient CR.
