To determine:
The definition of basement membrane with its origin and functions.
Introduction: Epithelial tissues are present on all the free surfaces of the body. Epithelial tissues prevent the tearing of connective tissues. Mostly epithelial cells occupy the surface of organs, vessels, and glands.

Explanation of Solution
The basement membrane is the extracellular covering of the tissues. It separates the lining of external and internal body surfaces from connective tissues. The basement membrane is present in epithelium (respiratory tract, skin), mesothelium (pericardial cavity, pleura) and endothelium (lymph and blood vessels.)
Origin: Basement membrane originates from epithelial and mesenchymal cells.
Functions of the basement membrane are as follows:
• Basement membrane provides support to the epithelium.
• It acts as a barrier between the epithelium and connective tissues to regulate the transport of large molecules.
• It anchors the epithelium with connective tissues.
Therefore, basement originates from epithelial and mesenchymal cells. The important function of the basement membrane is to provide physical support to organs of the body
