Chapter 4, Problem 1PE

Data obtained from a county auditor in the Excel file Home Market Value provide information about the age, square footage, and current market value of houses along one street in a particular subdivision. Considering these data as a population of homeowners on this street, compute the mean, variance, and standard deviation for each of these variables using a spreadsheet and formulas (4.1), (4.4), and (4.6). Verify your calculations using the appropriate Excel function.

Formula:

Population mean:

  μ=i=1NXiN

Population variance:

  σ2= ( x i x ¯ )2N

Population standard deviation:

  σ=σ

Calculation:

For each of the variable, need to find population mean, variance and standard deviation.

Variable House Age:

Total number of values = N=42

Mean = μ=125342=29.83

Using excel function: =AVERAGE(A2:A43)

Mean = 29.83 which is exactly matched with calculated mean.

Population variance:

  σ2=142×14516=5.76

Population standard deviation:

  σ=σ2=5.76=2.40

Using excel formula:

=VAR.P(A2:A43)

Variance = 5.76

=STDEV.P(A2:A43)

Standard deviation = 2.40

Both the values almost match with calculated value.

Variable square feet:

Mean = μ=7120142=1695.262

Using excel: =AVERAGE(B2:B43)

Mean = 1695.26 which is almost match with calculated value.

Population variance:

  σ2=47357.96

Population standard deviation:

  σ=σ2=47357.96=217.62

Using excel:

Population variance: =VAR.P(B2:B43) which gives 47357.96

Population standard deviation found by excel is matched with calculated variance.

Standard deviation: =STDEV.P(B2:B43) which gives 217.62

Standard deviation is also matched with calculated value.

Variable Market value:

Mean : μ=92069.05

Using excel, =AVERAGE(C2:C43) which gives 92069.05

Population variance:

  σ2=108715946.712

Population standard deviation:

  σ=σ2=108715946.712=10426.69

Using excel:

Population variance: =VAR.P(C2:C43) which gives 108715946.71

Population standard deviation: =STDEV.P(C2:C43) which gives 10426.69

Values found by excel and calculated values are same.

Question 2: When John started his first job, his first end-of-year salary was $82,500. In the following years, he received salary raises as shown in the following table. Fill the Table: Fill the following table showing his end-of-year salary for each year. I have already provided the end-of-year salaries for the first three years. Calculate the end-of-year salaries for the remaining years using Excel. (If you Excel answer for the top 3 cells is not the same as the one in the following table, your formula / approach is incorrect) (2 points) Geometric Mean of Salary Raises: Calculate the geometric mean of the salary raises using the percentage figures provided in the second column named “% Raise”. (The geometric mean for this calculation should be nearly identical to the arithmetic mean. If your answer deviates significantly from the mean, it's likely incorrect. 2 points) Hint for the first part of question 2: To assist you with filling out the table in the first part of the question,…
